Can I get into college for free because i am american indian?
I believe my Great Grandmother was full blood cherokee indian. I heard if you are 12 percent american indian you can go to college anywhere for free. Is this true and if so how to I find out what percent cherokee I am and how do I prove it?
To be honest that is a bunch of hoopla. I am a registered member of a tribe and quite frankly my tribe only covers 40 dollars per credit hour which doesn't add up to much over the course of even an associates degree. I also have tons of hoops to go through. For example, minimum 1/4 Native American, in a Federally recognized tribe, have proof of college attendance and grades, and THEN you get reimbursed. So you still had to have the money in the first place. Oh and you can't just go to any college. Some require you go to college where your tribe is (my case Michigan--I don't live there). To get scholarships, sometimes you have to agree to work on the Reservation after you complete your degree or go to a certain school.
Also it took us over 10 years just to register within the tribe. It is a very long and tedious process. Based on that information and your history it sounds like you might not even get in. Some tribes are very particular about new enrollees. Also, even if you're Great-Grandmother was actually 100% Native American, if she isn't registered. Too bad so sad. There are even people who are 100% today and have a hard time getting a tribal card. Some might not let you in unless you are a direct descendant of a tribal member.
So basically, free college is a no. Registered tribal member or not.
