I am going to get a new dog and want an english bulldog are they as bad as everyone says?
I have had american pit bull's and american bulldogs before and have always wanted an English bulldog now that I have the money the more I read and talk with people the more they tell me that the dog will be in the vet all the time and cost me thousands of dollars a year. I know the possible health problems just wondered if they happen with evey dog like everything is telling me it does or if most of these dogs live a healthy life.
No, they are not an unhealthy breed, they are a manufactured breed which can sometimes cause health issues, but that can be offset by choosing a reputable breeder with healthy, top quality dogs. A friend of mine breeds bulldogs and has worked hard to ensure their dogs are as healthy as possible. Her dogs often live to 12 years old and have been free of serious health problems. However, I used to work in a veterinary hospital and we did see bulldogs with serious issues, but no more than labs or any of the other highly popular breeds.
The best breeders work to improve their lines and select the most healthy dogs to breed. Therefore, you'll need to be very selective about your breeder and be sure to ask questions about the parent's and ancestor's health. Start with the national club, The Bulldog Club of America, http://www.thebca.org/ to find reputable breeders.
Then is up to you to help keep your dog healthy with proper diet, excercise and routine veterinary care. Also, consider purchasing pet health insurance as soon as you get the puppy. I have insurance on my pets and it is a big help if surgery, an accident or a problem occurs. I insure my pets through Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) and they have been a great.
