why is it important to have the walls of a pottery piece the same thickness?
so you don't get stresses (and more fragility) in the piece particularly while it's drying, but also during firing.
Areas with different thickness dry and consequently shrink in size with different rate.
Also for aesthetic reasons. Random thickness fluctuations rarely look good. Even thickness indicates mastery of technique. This is particularly important if you want to make really thin walled vessels. Varying thickness then usually means you get to start over.
