How do you clean and polish a trumpet?
I think a trumpet is silver plated, is it safe to use Tarnex on it or what is the right way to do this?
Fill you bath tub with warm water. If it is too hot for your skin, then it is too hot for the trumpet. Take out all of the slides and valves and put them off to the side, somewhere safe. Set the trumpet in the bath and let it sit while you clean out the little parts. Your local music store will sell "snake" brushes which are long and can twist through the horn. Use this on all the slides. Be very careful with the valves avoiding any scratches. Snake out the trumpet after this, it will have had time to break up any junk build up. Pay attention to the leadpipe especially, it is usually very dirty. Toweling off a trumpet after its soak usually polishes it well. If it needs some more attention the music store will have polishing cloths, make sure it is for silver finishes. If it is really tarnished I have used a chemical remover before, but soak it in the tub to make sure all the chemical is off. Ive been playing for 15 years and the tub cleaning is the best route! Once a month is usually best for cleaning.
