Does the Travellers cheque need to be dated and signed?

I was given a travellers cheque by a relative but it has no date nor a name it's payable to. Can I still deposit it?

The first question I have for you: Has the travelers cheque been signed at the top AND bottom of the cheque? If not, you will have a hard time cashing it. If you deposit it in the bank AND you are not the purchaser, your bank may place a hold on the funds until they clear. The date is not an issue here. When another person's name is added to the "Pay to the order of" line, it becomes a third party check. It becomes harder to cash for the recipient.

The main purpose of a travelers cheque is to purchase goods and services (for example, a store or restaurant). The person who buys the checks would sign over the cheque to the merchant and they would deposit it into their business checking. It was never intended to be passed from person to person. The bank has no way of proving that the purchaser (signer of the cheque) actually signed it and would not be able see proper identification of the signer.

The best way to get cash from your relative is to have them cash the travelers cheque for you and give you the cash.
